Books for Mums, Sisters and Aunties

In many different cultures women are the memory keepers, and since Mother's Day is on the horizon, we thought we should pay homage to all the fabulous females and storytellers in our lives including mums, grandmothers, aunties and sisters.

Here's a collection of heartwarming stories from Momento customers who have preserved maternal memories in a photo book. The books will ensure these wonderful human beings are remembered by their family and grandchildren.

After Trudy was diagnosed with dementia in 2007, her loving daughter Lauren feared that all the family's stories may be lost forever. In a world that was suddenly so out of their control, Lauren took charge and ensured that Trudy's life was documented and available for her family to treasure forever in a Momento photo book.

The Mother's Book - Spoken by Trudy Forbes and written by Lauren Thompson

Over a period of 18 months, mother and daughter spent hours together talking about the past, present and future. Lauren said, "we laughed and cried together and there were times where we would stop because the overwhelming reality of why we were doing this became too much."

"Sisters are...clothes borrowers, fit throwers, secret keepers, an enemy, a friend, a conversation without end, sassy, bossy, silly, fussy, mess up, fess up, get punished, fights over nothing, sharer of dreams, a headache, a pain, she gets spoiled again, a princess, a brat, she ruined my hat, I love her, I miss her, I tease her, I kiss her, she is my family and that means more to me what would I do without her?" - Wendy Bruhn

Sisters: 53 Reasons I love having you as my sister by Wendy Bruhns

For her sister's birthday, Wendy created a part history book, part book of quotes filled endless affirmations of love for her sister. The text is touching, and by using white text in a handwritten-style font, on a black background she has created a clean layout with emotional and visual impact. She has accompanied each page of quotes with a full page vintage black and white photo of the two of them, making the sisters the stars! This is a fabulous memento from one sister to another full of love and nostalgia.

In many cultures it's the woman's role to pass down family and cultural history through the art of story telling. Sunning Hill School co-created this book using memories told by the community's female elders to the students. They have combined illustrations and photos of the Aunties along with bright backgrounds and a child-like handwritten font.

Our Aunties Remember by Sunning Hill School

'Our Aunties Remember' is a heart warming, distinctly Australian educational photo book for young children which preserves historical information about a community's culture and their Aboriginal Aunties.
